Festival Report: Barnes Minis Schools Tag Rugby Festival – Year 3 & 4

Our second Minis and Local Primary Schools collaboration on 21st October 2016 was another incredibly successful event. It was held as a curtain-raiser to the Barnes RFC 2nd XV fixture versus Blackheath on the Rosslyn Park 4G pitch under floodlights. As “One Club” we brought rugby to many new players and families.

We hosted 14 teams from 10 primary schools: Barnes Primary (x2), St. Osmund’s, Holy Cross, Hotham, St. Mary’s (x2), All Saint’s (x2), Our Lady of Victories, Brandlehow, Sheen Mount, Kew River; plus the Barnes Barbarians. Over 140 players participated in the festival.

The format was Tag rugby on a quarter pitch playing almost continuous round-robin matches. It was the first time these school sides had played together and moreover, there was a lot of children playing rugby for the first time of their lives. The standard was amazing and there was real talent in action. Tommy Bell, current London Irish player (and formerly a Leicester Tigers and Wasps player) was our special guest visitor adding some sizzle and celebrity to the event.

Our thanks go to the many volunteers who make these things happen and make everyone’s lives much richer as a result. The general consensus is that we would all love to spend more evenings like this together. Rugby in the Community was the winner!
