Return to Rugby! The 2020-21 season

We are getting ready for Youth rugby at Barnes to restart on the weekend of 5th/6th September 2020: the Minis on Saturday 5th and Juniors, Colts and Girls section on Sunday 6th.

We will follow the recently updated RFU guidance agreed with Government. On the RFU Return to Rugby Road Map, we are now at “Stage C”. This means, for example, that no contact rugby is currently permitted but we can restart rugby activities for those that want to, with a number of changes implemented to ensure training only in small groups of players, undertaking only permitted activities, new hygiene and distancing measures and minimising use of shared kit. The focus will be on skills development, touch rugby games and fitness. Games will include the new Ready4Rugby format where appropriate to the age group. No matches or festivals involving other rugby clubs will take place for the time being, although the RFU hopes to start inter-club Ready4Rugby games this autumn.

We have now launched the player registration process for the new season. Registration is especially important to complete quickly this season, as we need to know in advance who will be attending training and will use the teamsnap app for this. This will enable us to organise training groups (with a maximum of 20 players each) that will be maintained through each session. It is also necessary for a track and trace capability.

We are busy developing our plans and new protocols to minimise risk of Covid transmission. It goes without saying, of course, that nobody should attend training if showing symptoms, or required to self-isolate, or to quarantine after overseas travel. And no player, coach or parent is under any pressure to return; we fully understand that some may not be ready to return in September and those with underlying health conditions, who may be at greater risk from Covid-19, should consider the transmission risk in group activity and decide whether to return at this time.

More details on all the above will follow shortly. Note that for some Minis groups, there may be slight changes to the normal training times in order for us to spread out more within the available space. Applicable age groups, most likely U11, U10 and U9 will be advised in due course.

We look forward to seeing you in September, or later in the season. For existing members, please re-register using the email on 18th September 2020. For new members, please use the link in the Join Us page of this website.
