Barnes Rugby Minis
The heritage of rugby in England commenced – in many ways – at Barn Elms sports fields back in 1862 with the first recorded game between Barnes and Richmond. We are now delighted to introduce local children to rugby through our burgeoning Minis section.
We aspire to make playing rugby fun for all: Kids love it, Parents love it and Coaches love it. We champion rugby’s core values of Respect, Teamwork, Discipline, Enjoyment – and most importantly – Sportsmanship. We are committed to providing an inclusive, ego-free environment and everyone at the club is welcome to contribute in their own way. Barnes is formally accreditted to the RFU’s Kid’s First programme. Quilter Kids First puts children first. Aimed at U7-U13 boys and girls, it upskills coaches and creates a great rugby environment, so that everyone stays in the game for longer.
Under 5s to Under 8s play Tag Rugby with contact introduced at under 9 level. A progression of new skills such as rucking, mauling and scrums are introduced at later age groups.
We provide free hot dogs for Minis players on most Saturdays in the Barnes club house following training. It’s a great time for kids and parents to bond over a quiet drink or two and to chat about how things are progressing. We enjoy Christmas and end of season discos to round off the terms, including awards ceremonies and a free party for the whole family.
Training is on Saturdays which is a perfect way to get the weekend underway with an rigorous activity, some fresh air and a shared coffee. The Minis play at Barn Elms Sports Trust fields, adjacent to Rocks Lane, from 09.30am-11am. We play in a select number of friendlies and festivals on Sundays with other local clubs. Festival fees are covered by the annual subscription fee.
All age groups get to enjoy a Rugby Tour each year. The Under 7s to Under 10s tour to the same destination, usually as a group of 250-300 tourists – including entire families. The Under 11 age group tours annually to Laon in France marking a ‘rite of passage’ into the Junior division. These tours are very much part of the Club’s ethos and serve to bind the player and parents into a tight unit. Our tours are about building lifelong memories and friendships.
