BARNES & RFU GIRLS RUGBY FESTIVAL

Festival Report: Barnes Minis Girls Schools Tag Rugby Festival – Year 5&6

Our first girls only tag festival held at Rosslyn Park 4G on 20th April 2018 was a supremely successful event. It was organised in collaboration with the RFU with the objective of promoting girl’s participation in rugby, through local primary and secondary schools, as well as Barnes Rugby Club.

We hosted 9 primary school’s teams from Barnes Primary, St. Osmund’s, Hotham, Our Lady of Victories, Brandlehow and Kew River. We had junior-level participation from the Ark Putney Academy.

We were blessed with a glorious evening of sun and warmth, a full 27 degrees hotter than the original fixture which had been cancelled due to snow. The smiles and enthusiasm from the players was testament to a successful format of speed-tag-rugby. The quality of the general play surprised everyone. The standard was very high and the girls clearly enjoyed playing rugby in girls-only teams on this occasion.

The feedback from the parents was tremendous. Parents were able to enjoy the rugby with an alcoholic beverage in hand from the RP bar, enjoying the end of the week, basking in the setting sunshine and the glow of the beaming faces of the players.

Barnes Rugby are delighted for as many girls as possible to join the Under 5 to Under 11 teams that play at BEST pitches on a Saturday morning from 09.30 – 11.00. We also have two junior squads for secondary school ages (Under 12 to Under 14) who play at
Barn Elms pitches on a Sunday from 10:00-12:00.

Our thanks go to the many volunteers who make these things happen and make everyone’s lives much richer as a result. The consensus is that we would all love to spend our Friday evenings like this together. Rugby in the Community was the winner!
